SAP R/3 and electronical customs declaration (Atlas/Germany)

E-customs

The times of the paper customs declaration are over. In the past the electronic submission of customs declarations belonged to the exclusive domain of customs agents. However, new technologies now allow a very wide range of importers and/or exporters to submit their customs declaration electronically. In future all or most customs formalities will be dealt with electronically. Consequently, for companies who have not yet given thought to electronically submitting of customs declarations now is the time to do so. Why? Well, to mention some reasons:

  • after the ending of the transition period, it will only be possible to place goods under the regulation of transit (NCTS) when the customs declaration is electronically submitted;
  • already now in some cases companies are only allowed to apply certain simplified customs regulations if they file their customs declarations electronically;
  • in particular EU Member States are more and more demand that the periodical VAT return is electronically filed, or at least are offering the possibility to submit them electronically;
  • electronically filing of customs declarations or VAT returns forces companies to think about their IT-infrastructure for recording, collecting and archiving all relevant data, more in particular from the perspective of integrating all systems for electronically filing of customs declarations or VAT/tax returns in the most efficient way in the financial bookkeeping or in other systems.

The current practice shows that a full integration of software solutions for electronically filing of customs declarations or VAT returns in the financial bookkeeping systems is rather the exception than the standard situation. Apart form the costs of programming interfaces and keeping them up-to-date, normally a loss of efficiency needs to be taken into account as not all information can or not immediately be used the way it should be or is wanted. For companies who are using SAP and involved in import and/or export transactions, there is good news: smallToll/3® is a SAP based module that can be fully integrated in SAP.

Compared with other software solutions for electronically submitting customs declarations, we consider smallToll/3® highly recommendable for companies that work with SAP systems. Also small and medium entreprises (SME's) who work with SAP Business One will see that the software solution smallToll/3® is within their reach.
